Budget friendly grain recipes: Grilled pizza sandwich
This week’s budget-friendly grain recipe is the perfect lunchtime meal that incorporates Ontario wheat! It is a combination of two classics: pizza and a grilled cheese sandwich, served on delicious, whole wheat bread. This recipe is quick, easy, and can be made with ingredients you may already find in your home.

Yield: 1 sandwich

Cook time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of whole wheat bread
- Make it homemade with our recipe for Oat and whole wheat bread
- 1/2 cup of shredded cheese (our recipe calls for mozzarella, but any cheese you have in your fridge would taste great in this recipe!)
- 6-8 slices of pepperoni
- 2 tbsp of pizza sauce
- ½ tbsp of butter
Directions:
- Preheat a small pan over medium heat.
- Spread one tablespoon of pizza sauce on each side of the bread.
- Sprinkle ¼ cup of cheese on top of sauce on one slice of bread.
- Place pepperoni evenly over the top of the cheese.
- Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the pepperoni.
- Place the other sauced slice of bread on top of the cheese to close the sandwich.
- Place butter onto the preheated pan and let it melt.
- Once melted, place the sandwich into the pan to begin grilling.
- Grill on each side for about 2.5 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool, and enjoy!
